Course Description
This course is designed to provide students experience in the process and development of their altruistic tendencies. Students must select approved service area. Learning will be experiential. Student will become aware of the needs in the community and by adopting techniques and practices that will be beneficial to the recipient of the service they will profit from the opportunity to serve.

Textbook and Supplies
No text book required, suggested “The Call of Service” by Robert Coles and “Some Do Care” by Anne Colby and William Damon

Course Objectives
1. Provide an avenue for self-exploration by experiential service learning.
2. To provide students with a basic understanding of community needs.
3. To provide student ways to address those recognized needs by personally giving of self and time.
4. To explore connections between community and the student and their efforts as an individual in solving community problems.
5. Understand the importance of reporting, reflection and evaluation by keeping a journal and completing a final reflections paper.

Policies and Procedures

A. Students must select an approved project. Project must meet minimum hour requirement of 18 hours of direct hands on volunteer involvement for each credit hour applied. 1 credit=18 hrs, 2 credits= 36 hrs, 3 credits=54 hrs, Additional hours are encouraged.
B. Student completes a “Service Learning Contract” stating project intentions.
(Two or more approved projects may be used during one semester for credit. A few hours may come from other one time projects sponsored by the College.)
C. A log must be maintained that reflects the date and hours involved in the project.
D. A journal must be written that reflects the daily activities with in the project.
E. Students will be required to provide a written or oral report on their project at mid-term. A report on achievement and concerns is encouraged.
F. A final paper must be written reflecting on the project and the student learning that took place.
G. All materials must be typed and turned in no later than the end of week 14.

Grading Practices
A. Testing Procedures: There will be a midterm oral/written report .
